Learn the ins and outs of modelling with Map3D direct from the author, Dr. Terry Wiles. More than 74 Map3D courses have been presented in Australia, Canada and South Africa for the past 20 years. More than 614 engineers, researchers, students etc. have benefited from these courses that teach you what you need to know to apply modelling to solve practical design problems.

Course Theme: The entire course will concentrate on hands on learning of modelling interpretation and application allowing participants to work through real examples in a combined lecture/tutorial style.

Course Content: Theory and application of failure criterion, back analysis, elastic and non-linear modelling, loading system stiffness and incorporation of seismicity. New content on the application of statistics and probability of failure are covered in detail. New features in the program including time saving automatic generation of Excel plots and the new visualization data base are demonstrated tutorial style.

Who Should Attend: The course will benefit anyone who wants to increase their familiarity with modelling, rock mechanics and model interpretation. Senior mining staff as well as personnel who intend to use Map3D have benefited from this course in the past.

Handouts: A full set of course notes will be provided to all participants. These notes include all presentation slides with notes, detailing the concepts discussed.

Course Details:

Day 1 morning - Basic rock mechanics concepts/model interpretation

Day 1 lectures concentrate on the review of basic principles required for the understanding and interpretation of modelling results.
The fundamentals - model inputs and outputs and accuracy.
Use of modelling for quantitative mine design.
Using modelling results to assess pillar stability, drift stability, fault slip, joint set activation.
Assessment of model results accuracy and reliability.
Methodology for calculation of statistics.
Utilization of probability of failure in the design of pillar widths, spans, support length etc.
Discussion of the validity of Mohr-Coulomb, Hoek-Brown and back-analysis for model calibration.
Assessment of fault stability.
Use of ubiquitous joint failure criterion.

Day 1 afternoon - Map3D basics - model building and setup using the Map3D CAD interface

Everything user's need to know about setup and running Map3D.
This includes hands on model building and running simple examples.
Free-hand construction, FFLoop construction, DDLoop construction.
Focus on basic model building skills and familiarization with the program interface.

Day 2 morning - Elastic and non-linear rock mechanics concepts/model interpretation

Day 2 lectures concentrate on the application of rock mechanics principles in the interpretation of modelling results.
A pplication and interpretation of elastic modelling results and the extension to non-linear modelling.
Multiple example applications of the use of failure criteria and back-analysis techniques in design are presented tutorial style.
Participants will work through design examples involving of pillars, backs, abutments, ground support, blast-hole stability etc.
Integrated Excel plotting functions are used throughout.

Day 2 afternoon - Advanced model building

Focus on advanced model building techniques.
Accuracy of results including discussion of program control parameters, discretization and lumping.
Specification of far field stress state, modulus, strength parameters etc.
Program functionality including pre-processing of outlines, rapid model building use the trace routine, intersections, zero strain support placement, model restart and initialization, use of higher order elements, batch processing.
This includes hands on model building and running simple examples.

Day 3 morning - Advanced modelling - Map3Di and Map3D Non-Linear

Day 3 lectures concentrate on advanced rock mechanics principles including non-linear modelling.
Fault slip analysis.
Pillar failure analysis.
Determination of realistic ground deformations, support loading, load transfer between yielding pillars
Simulation of backfill, stability of openings undergoing large deformations.
Use of modelling to identify burst prone locations.
Correlation with observed bursting.
Determining the potential for gentle versus violent failures.
Use for pillars and fault slip analysis. Map3Di - incorporation of seismicity.

Day 3 afternoon - Review of models built throughout the industry.

Examples of Map3D models used at various sites around the world are reviewed.
Simulation of open pit mining, tabular mining.
Loose ends regarding specific user requirements are discussed.
Building models to get answers to complex problems.
User supplied models can be reviewed and built.
New program features including the new visualization database are demonstrated.
